Question

I have a male black pug who is 3 years old. A few days ago he started having matter in his eyes when he woke up in the morning. This morning I took him out (after washing his face and eyes) and I noticed the right eye wasn't clear brown like the other eye. It was kind of bluish like maybe a cataract. He doesn't have bulging eyes so I'm surprised he has gotten eye problems.   I'd planned to take him to the vet tomorrow anyway, but when I saw the bluish unclear right eye I got very upset and can hardly wait to find out what this might be. He doesn't seem to have discomfort or itching. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your pug.

This is likely an ulcer forming in the eye, not an uncommon finding in pugs. At 3 years of age, it is less likely a cataract. Your vet will want to do a few tests to see how best to treat this: they will make sure the pressure in the eye is normal, that your pug can produce sufficient amount of tears to keep the eye lubricated, and will stain the eye to make sure that no scratch is present.

Because there is a chance this is indeed an ulcer, which leaves the eye open up to possible infection, until you get to your vet appointment tomorrow, I would rinse the eye out with sterile saline, like that found in regular contact lens solution (not the ones with additives and disinfectants, just sterile NaCl solution). Rinse well without the container tip touching the eye, and you can wipe away the excess moisture from the face (not the eye) with a soft washcloth or cotton ball. Rinse 2-3 times today and when you get up tomorrow morning before your appointment.

These can become uncomfortable quickly, so indeed that appointment is necessary tomorrow.

Best of luck,

Christine

Thank you for your information--it was so helpful. Also, how do you thing he got this ulcer? He plays at the dog park and chases a ball and sometimes kicks up dust. Could that be it? Also he plays with other dogs, could he have caught it from one of them? thank you.

Accepted Answer

The most common reasons for ulcers to occur is from a scratch on the cornea. Indeed, it could occur from dust/debris getting into the eye, or could be the result of rubbing at the eye with his paws after debris irritated it. Excessive pressure in the eyes can also cause this, which is more a genetic problem seen with pugs, and 'dry eye' can also lead to ulcers when the eye gets very dried out. This is why these range of tests are often all done together so best treatment is applied. They all only take about a minute each to complete and will likely be done right in front of you to discuss the findings.

Ulcers are not contagious to other animals or people.
