Question

Hello, I just purchased a brand new tecumseh model hm100 in a garage sales. The motor has an electric starter. Could you tell me the voltage and amperage this starting system uses? Also there is a two wire connecter to the starter motor, how are they connected? Many thanks, David

Hello could you tell me a little more about your engine, Do you have the complete set of engine numbers? Does the engine have an Air Cleaner and do the wires you mention come right from the starter or from under the shroud? Thanks Tom

Engine Model HM 100 159424s    (c)

Engine Family 1 TPXS. 3582BA

Displacement 358   D.O.M.   1017D

The starter has a battery connection lug.

Two wires ( green and red) come from under the shroud.

There is a air cleaner. This engine is brand new, still in shipping box.

Thanks for your help. David

Answer

The reason I ask about the air cleaner is because I though this might be a an engine for a snow thrower. Yours is 12 Volt system. The two wires coming from under the shroud, the red one is your charging wire and the green one is your engine kill. With a single wire coming from you alternator you should have a 3 amp charging system. The red wire would go to an ignition switch on the spade marked B (Battery) and the Green wire would go to the M Spade (Magneto). If you are using a toggle switch then take the red lead to one side of the switch and the other side would go to ground. You can take the charging wire right to the positive side of battery if you have no other choice. Thanks Tom Please click accept

Tom, This engine rotates clockwise, are there any engines that rotate counter clockwise? Thanks for your help. Take care David
