Info Request

Have you tried to run it with the gas cap off?

no i have not run with cap off, but when this happens i have loosened the cap but put it back on. thought maybe the vent in the cap was plugged so i opened the vent up a little bit. still does the same thing. i think it is vapor locking, but don't know how to correct.

Try to run it with the gas cap off of it as it may not be venting.

ran engine with gas cap off. monitored gas flow through filter. at beginning gas flow was reasonably good. engine ran for approx. 20 to 30 mins. gas flow slowly diminished and engine died. with engine off gas flow slowly fills filter approx. one third.

If you pull the line off of at the fuel filter does the line fill back up?

yes disconnecting the fuel line at the carb the fuel will flow out of the tank but at a slower rate than i would suspect

Answer

Have you check to make sure that the lines are not bad. The insides of the fuel line can swell due to the chemical reation of the fuel these days. I would also check the fuel tank for an obstruction as well.

fuel tank removed and cleaned, fuel lines replaced. engine still died once. but did run for a long period of time after that.

Accepted Answer

It may have still had some remnants of debris in it. I would run it again and see what it does.
