Question

2 year old Chihuahua is listless, not eating, drinking little. No urine output yesterday but peed and pooped overnight. Tail wagging to cooing, petting. Eyes bright but not herself. Maybe slight fever, maybe not. Palpated all over belly, nontender. No organomegaly. Never spayed. House dog, rarely outside. Was fine Friday, started Saturday, not better today. I am an MD. Thoughts. Would be very grateful. ?Dangerous.

Info Request

Good morning Doctor,

Can you get a rectal temp on her?

What and when did she eat last?

Any vomiting, diarrhea or constipation?

Any discharges?

Thanks,

Terri

Can you get a rectal temp on her? No, but her temp feels normal.

What and when did she eat last?Friday

Any vomiting, diarrhea or constipation?I found a little vomit from last night. She peed and pooped during the night on paper as she usually does.

Any discharges?No.

Basically I want to know if this is seen as happening without it having severe implications. I know it could be something awful, but my question is could it be something that will just pass. Is this seen in Chihuahuas? Since she rarely leaves the house, and has little contact with other dogs, it's hard to see how she could get an infection, unless it is from one of us. Strongly doubt access to toxins.

Answer

Dear friend,

She cannot catch any human infections as they are species specific.

Since she is not spayed, I worry about Pyometra. Urinary tract infections are also possible.

Temp is normal @ 100 - 102.5

Right now she sounds dehydrated. May also be hypoglycemic. These things are common in small dogs.

I would pick up any dog food.Try a small amount of boiled chicken with all fat drained off, chop meat , or baby food with no onion, beef, turkey, etc

Add unflavored pedialyte to her water 50/50 to hydrate her and balance her electrolytes.

Put a drop of pancake syrup on her tongue to raise her blood sugar in case she is a bit hypoglycemic. That should perk her up.

If she develops any abdominal pain, bloating, constipation or cannot keep anything down she needs to be seen by a vet.

Please let me know how she is doing. I will always be here for you

I hope your baby feels better very soon..

Best wishes for her,

Terri

One more question. Does lack of tenderness over the uterus imply pyometra is unlikely to be present?

Posted by Terri Riba 91 days and 10 hours ago.

Answer

Yes, Pyo is unlikely unless their is tenderness, odorous discharge, fever and pain.

However, I am concerned that she is dehydrated. If you cannot get her to drink you may have to do SubQ.

Please let me know how she is doing.

Best wishes for her,

Terri

Can I just inject normal saline subQ? How much - she weighs 7 pounds

Answer

Do you have Ringers?

A dog her weight could get 150 to 200 cc.every 30 hours.

Sorry, just one more. Is there any value in an empiric shot of some antibiotic?

Dose?

Accepted Answer

I would not start her on antibiotics without a diagnosed infection and culture because doing so will make her system resistant to certain antibiotics.

Before you do anything try to get her to drink on her own.

Good luck with her
