Question

I am driving a BMW 7 E38 1995 model. More often now ,when the car is on the road for more than 1 hour ,i can't re-start the car after stopping . No crank sound (just like flat battery ) but all the battery lights ignite as normal. I am usually able to start after 45-60 mins. My mechanic has not been able to detect the problem as the car is able to start by the time help arrives.
Please advise what would the cause for this . Is it something got to do with overheating mechanism that prevents starting. There is however no overheating indicated during this problem. Please advise.

Thanks/surend (XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX)

I have ensured that it has nothing to do with the car alarm as it is not connected to ignition. Previous demolizer has been disconnected/removed.

Good morning, I hope I can help you.

You should clean the battery connections and also make sure they are tight. Also check the alternator charging voltage is good. Check the engine earth connections too.

Yes the battery and alternator connections have been checked when the car is stalled but no response. Typically it re starts after 45 minutes. What other cause could there be?

Answer

If there is no cranking sound, then the next check to make is at the starter motor. Check the connections, the solenoid and make sure the solenoid wire gets a feed from the ignition switch when in the crank position.

If it does't then check the switch and the wiring.

If it does and doesn't crank check the engine earth and if ok replace the starter motor.
