She had a bad allergy a few months ago for a week. No fever just sneezing and congestion. It cleared up, but she didn't want to eat anything except canned cat food for a month. Now she eats and drinks fine, but she lost a few pounds. She only weighed 8 pounds to start with, now she weighs 6 pounds. How can I help her gain weight?

She has lost about 2 pounds total. She eats Dry catfood: Science Diet Indoor cat. Our two cats have eaten science diet from day one. She eats fine and drinks normal. She doesn't seem to want to lay on our lap for very long. I imagine she isn't comfortable. I have felt around on her body. There isn't any lumps or bumps. She doesn't seem to flinch whenever we feel any bones or joint movements either. My other cat, her brother, was by her side when she was not feeling well. And he never got sick or acted like her. So we are just stumped. I am concerned athow skinny she is.

Dear friend,

I am sorry your girl was not feeling well. She may have had cat flu and been unable to smell her food.

Weight and hair loss is usually related to hyperthyroid. The cats eats great but the excess thyroid hormone burns up all the calories.

The problem is that this disorder can lead to your baby developing diabetes, high blood pressure and other ailments.

We do have excellent meds for this but is is necessary to do a T4 thyroid blood test.Any other thyroid test can be inaccurate.

It can also be related to renal issues especially if there is excess shedding because the hair becomes very dry.

Stress weakens the immune system and can lead to illness.Dental disease also depresses immunity and sends bacteria into the organs.

Now that she is eating again I would not feed all dry.

Cats are attracted to smelly foods - the stronger the better. If she wants tuna, give it to her You can also try fancy feast, clam juice or baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

These brands below, are well-recommended and contain nothing artificial, plus, contain meat as the first, or within the first three ingredients:

Wellness (http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/

Felidae (http://www.canidae.com/

Innova (http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=inn-home

Newman's Own Organics (http://www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/home/

Natural Balance (http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/catformulas/NB_CatCanned.html

These high protein foods will put weight back on her.

I hope all will be well so please let me know how she is doing.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
