Question

I have a 11/2 yr old male cat who has not been eating his canned food for about a week now. It is very hot and humid right now in my area. Could this be a reason he is not eating his food now? His energy level is not right either. He's usually running around looking for trouble. He's just laying around. His nose was warm and dry earlier when I got back from my trip today. He seems to be eating his dry food though. Should I be concerned at this point?

Hi there,

Thank you for your post!

Is your cat vomiting?

Having diarrhea?

Weight loss?

Reply

No vomiting or diarrhea. I haven't noticed any weight loss either. He's still drinking water too. He gets upset when it rains and storms and it's been doing that the past 2 days I've been gone.

Have you noticed any breathing changes?

Can you find pain anywhere if you pet him?

Any discharge from the nose or eyes?

No breathing changes or discharge from eyes or nose, but he may be a little touchy on his lower abdomen near his bladder. He doesn't like that too much.

Is he urinating normally?

I haven't been here to see. I've been away since Wed and just got back today so I don't know. I had someone cleaning the boxes but he isn't too observant and all he told me was that he ate his food on Wed but stopped after that. I can watch him closer if I need to. Or I can try to make an appointment at my vet tomorrow a.m. if I need to. He's been hiding, but I don't know if that was because of the thunderstorms we had here. He gets upset and hides when it rains (scaredy cat).

If you press on his belly - towards the back - can you see if you feel something firm, maybe the size of a small ball (smaller than a tennis ball) and see if he is painful when you do that?

No, he let me touch him on the belly and feel around and it didn't seem to bother him but his nose is warm and dry. Is that normal?

Accepted Answer

Hi there,

Yep - the nose is normal :)

This may be one of those difficult cases, where the signs are causing some distress, and you are obviously concerned, but are just vague enough that pinpointing an exact cause may be difficulty.

For now - it does not seem like an emergency.
- No vomiting
- No diarrhea
- No weight loss
- No pain you can find
- Eating dry food
- No change in drinking
- etc.

BUT - As I tell all my clients - before spending hundreds on tests - NOTHING beats a good physical examination. If this were my cat, I would get a vet appointment just to make sure nothing is wrong. Make sure there is not a reason he is acting this way.

I would also check to make sure he is urinating ok as this is very important for male cats.

Please let me know if this helps or your have additional questions!
