Question

I have a 8 year old male pug and he has had a nasal problem for months white discharge, he gags all the time and coughs every once in awhile, some days seems to be worse than others, our vet has had us try 3 different anbiotics which have not worked has tried a medicine for mites in the nose, nothing has worked. Had an x ray of chest everything looks great. Not sure what to do next.

Hi,

Has your vet looked inside your dog's nose to see if there is a foreign body, like a blade of grass, foxtail, etc., or nasal polyps.

If the nasal discharge is white, that should indicate no infection, as it would most likely be green, with infection, but, also, a sinus or dental problem could cause this type of symptom, so ask your vet to investigate and consider these other possibilities. an x-ray of the sinus and oral cavity might be a good next step.

Your dog might also have a constant nasal drip, due to allergies or sinus problems, and this is making him gag/cough.

I hope things improve soon for your buddy!

Thank you so much for your help!! are vet did say something about polyps and maybe a dental problem! It has been close to three months with this problem how much time should we give it before we should look into something else and could this be life threatning??

Info Request

Hi again, and you're most welcome. Thanks very much for your reply, accept and most generous bonus.

For the moment, from your description, it sounds more annoying for your dog, than life-threatening, but of course only your vet who knows your dog's medical history best, could assure you of this.

I wouldn't wait any longer, if this problem has been present for so many months, with no relief from the medications already tried, so discuss these other possibilities re: nasal polyps, sinus, and dental problems with your vet, and if necessary, ask for a referral to a canine veterinary specialist. Specialists are usually found in ER vet centers and Veterinary Colleges.

I hope all will be well.
