Question

We have 2 yamaha waverunner xl760's (1998) and have been having trouble starting them. We have been unable to get one started and we took it to our marine mechanic and it started in the shop for them every time. We take it to the lake, put it in, and it won't pop. It turns over, but won't catch. The mechanic suggested spraying fogging oil into the carbs and we've done that and it pops but then won't start. Is there something about putting it in the water that changes the starting? The second one is starting fine but is bogging down when we get it over 30mph. We have replaced spark plugs, fuel filter but I'm wondering if we might have debris in the jet. I don't see anything when I look into the jet - is there another place to check? We would love to get them running reliably and it's getting frustrating! Please help!!!

Optional Information

Make (of engine): yamaha
Model (of engine): xl-760
Year: 1998
Horsepower: ?

Already Tried:
We have tried fogging oil sprayed into the carbs - works out of the water but not when we launch them. (advised by our mechanic). They start when we take them into the mechanic, but not in the water. Also replaced spark plugs, and fuel filter.

Machine #2: Bogging down - replaced fuel fiilter, spark plugs, mechanic pulled a little debris from the jet and it worked - now bogging down again at 30 mph - don't know where else to check for debris other than the jet. Don't see anything there.

Answer

Welcome to JA

you need to rebuild both carbs and add a primer kit and get rid of the chokes

also run fuel stabilizer also

i rebuild jet ski carbs almost daily, because if you let them sit for 6 weeks they will gum up

We have rebuilt both carbs last year - do we have to do it yearly?

Answer

yes if you do not drain the gas out of the carb or run a stabilizer

they have small screens in them that clog up with varnish from 6 week old gas

Is that the same problem with the jet ski that's bogging down? Is there another place to check for debris if I don't see anything in the jet?

Answer

more than likley it is in the screens

yes both sound like carbs

One last question and then I'll hit the accept button...Where are the screens to check? Can I do it myself or do I have to take it to a mechanic?

Are those screens that are getting gunked up on top of the carbs when you lift off the plastic casing? If so, can you take them off and clean them with any product?

Accepted Answer

The filters are inside the carbs.
You'll notice one side of the carbs have a square cover that's tilted so it is a diamond shape.
They are under the opposite side.
If you're comfortable taking the carbs off and tearing them apart then it's an easy fix. However if not, then a tech would be in order here.
