Question

I just returned from a 10 day vacation and noticed my "farm" cat has
dry looking patches of skin on his face around his eyes and on his nose He is black and the patches look dry and white I have also noticed that a transient "tom" cat has a bumpy feel when I pet him, maybe this is related???   I am concerned about the eye area I have several outside cats and have not yet noticed anything like this on them. One cat did have dry patches on his belly and hind legs before I left
but they are gone now
The only thing I did with my harem is flea and tick them and treated them for ear mites before I left Is their anything that I can do
that won't cost me an arm and a leg. Our local
vets only treat large animals and I don't think I can transport all of them 25 miles since they are outside farm animals. Can you help?

This is Dr. Stephenson here. It is hard to tell for sure without seeing the kitty but my first guess would be possibly ringworm. Ringworm will show up as bald patches with dry/scaly skin. They usually aren't itchy from ringworm. Other possibilities are skin mites or mange (not seen very often in cats) or even possibly an allergy to something. Miconazole cream works well for ringworm..you can get it over the counter at any local pharmacy. Maybe give it a try? It won't hurt him if it isn't ringworm but the problem with topicals in cats is they usually groom it off. If it is mange..ivermectin injections are treatment of choice which your large animal vets should have..that is usually inexpensive. Hope this helps.
