Answer

A certain degree of shedding of hair is normal in most rabbits. Depending on the seasons and photocycles, the degree of shedding may increase or decrease at various times of the year. Typically, a normal, healthy rabbit will havve a major shed two times per year. If all proceeds normally, the shed areas regrow as the old coat sheds out.

Some lines of rabbits shed more than others, which is simply a normal genetic variation. Therefore, I would not be too preocculied with necessarily comparing the amount of shed this rabbit does, as compared with other rabbits you currently have, have had before, or other rabbits owned by friends or family.

I am glad to see that you have not discovered any areas of baldness, which provides evidence that what you are observing is simply a normal coat shed. If you continue to see no specific bald spots, reddness or thening of the skin, sores, or scabs, then I would not worry. However, if you begin to see any of these things, then I would take the bunny to a vet, since these signs could indicate fur mite, mange, ringworm, or bacterial infection.

He is a black and white rabbit and the hair that comes off when stroking him is tipped white at the roots is that ok?? and is it just his coat shedding then?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that is still consistent with normal shed based you your bunny's coloring.
