Question

I had a situation with my fireplace....circumstances were that the wood flooring ran right up to the hearth, and then some slate slabs were laid over the wood right in front of the hearth. The grout wore away between the slate and the wood, and a spark from the fire got in there an ignited the wood underneath the slate. So my question is.........Is it normal to run the wood right up to the edge of the hearth, or would that be a code violation?

Hi XXXXXXXXXX
The situation you describe is a code violation in just about any jurisdiction. The code requires a minimum 4" concrete slab extending a minimum of a 8" beyond the side & 16" in front of a fireplace opening that is less than 6 sq ft. Openings greater than 6 sq ft require 12" on sides and 20" in front.
