How to Calculate Severance Pay:
Here is an example from one employer. The law does not dictate how an employer does this. It is their internal policy that should outline how this is calculated. But this example is a common one I saw while researching this issue.
Multiply the number of weeks of severance pay due employee times 40 hours = Total hours
Divide the current monthly rate and divide it by 174 = Hourly Rate
Multiply the total hours times the hourly rate = Severance Pay due employee.
Example:
16 weeks of severance pay times 40 hours = 640 total hours
Current monthly $3,479 salary divided by 174 = $19.99 Hourly Rate
640 hours times $19.99 = $12793.60 severance pay due employee.
