Question
Hi,
I work for a bar restaurant (well known) and the GM made a pass and put his hands on me in his office. A few days later I went out of town for 3 weeks thinking my job would still be available. When I returned the GM and the Bar Manager said that because of slow times, not being able to give me shifts, etc that they had to let me go but I could be oncall...I feel like i was let go because of the whole thing in the office but time did pass and only because I was going out of town no time to address it. Looking for a job now and afraid if I say something I won't get a good reference...your thoughts? Anita, Milwaukee, WI

It only just happened 2 days ago. I hadn't worked there very long (2 weeks training)and they knew I was going for 3 weeks. He had made no attempt to hide his "like" for me and he did mention a few times his desire to "ride on the back of my motorcycle" and that I was "sexy" and he "liked my hips" at which point he put his hands on them and gave me a spin...very uncomfortable. I did tell him "you're married, no!" when he asked me out on a date...

It is really hard to say if you were fired because of the economy or because of the incident. But since you did not report it, the employer had no way of addressing the issue. You can report it to the GM's manager or to their HR department so they can look into it and they may find he fired you for his own personal reasons. The employer can not lie or give false info when giving a reference or you can sue them so if they give a bad reference you may have a lawsuit.

Thanks for answering. In response to your statement, I noticed he had hired new people and I also noticed that the place is still booming. It is a national corporation with many locations. I was told when I left that "my job would still be here when you get back" this came from the bar manager, and the GM said "I see you as having your own clientele and working afternoons" sooo I'm thinking my job is secure
Answer
It does appear that he was sexually harassing you but without you filing complaints to his boss or HR the employer has no way to address this. You should still file the complaints and allege he fired you because you turned him down and see what the upper level management think and if they will get rid of him or give you a position in a different resturant.
