Question

I have a cabin that I am doing vacation rentals in to help pay the mortgage. Recently a family was in there and one of their kids scratched through the Beige laminate with a pin. How can I repair this?
Thanks,
Sherry

I haven't seen it myself but it was bad enough that my cleaning service wanted me to know about it. Here's what they said: She said it looked like a kid scribbled with a blue pen on your counter, by the guest book area. She used your bleach cleaner and a magic eraser and it did not all come off. She said it looks scratched into the counter.

Answer

Blue is not a core color of laminate so there is hope. Try fingernail polish remover which is acetone. That should disolve the ink. If you can call your tenant to find out the make of pen or marker and get that info to me, I can make a more specific recommendation.

I hope that this information was helpful to you. Hair spray will get the ink off. Maybe I taught you something! I am not concerned about that. It is the scratches I am concerned about. What do you recommend to fill in the scratches with?

Accepted Answer

WoW, sure am glad I don't use hair spray spray!
Assuming the scratch is superficial, 300 grit wet sandpaper, then 400, then 600 will polish the surface. Add a drop of dishsoap to 2 ounces of water. Dab the soapy water onto the scratch and polish with the sand paper. Keep it wet, wiping frequently and using fresh soapy water. If the laminate has a high gloss mirror finish, this will dull the finish a little.
