Question

If I apply PVA to cereamic wall tiles (2 whole walls) can I then hang a paper backed, vinyl wall covering - it is virtually impossible to comtemplate removing the tiles, probably replastering the two walls and then hanging wallpaper?

Answer

Hi and thanks for using JustAnswer.com
PVA primer-sealers are great at preparing a smooth surface but cannot correct minor imperfections in surface textures. If something or someone impacts the low spots of the grout and rounded tile edges, the wallpaper will tear. As you attempt to squeege the wallpaper, it will distort as the squeege applies pressure to the low spots. If you are more interested in not having to look at those tiles, than you are in having a smooth presentation of the wallpaper, go for it. You may encounter drying issues with the glue as the tile and PVA are non absorbant- especially if the wallpaper has a vinyl topcoat.
It is easier to tear out the wall and tile, hang new drywall, tape the seams, prime, and apply the wallpaper to the flat surface, than it is to try to work with a lumpy surface.

OK, thanks. Tearing out the wall is definitely NOT an option - I intend using a proprietry application of leveler to take out grout lines, not fussy about slight bumpy effect and will cover with non-vinyl, heavy/medium analglypta type wall covering if that improves drying and adhesive properties. Doe that make sense?

Yes. The application of leveler is almost as much work as preparing new drywall. But that will take care of the voids. Good luck- Steve

I hope that this information was helpful to you. If it was please remember to click "ACCEPT" on your screen to make sure that I am paid for my efforts.
