Hello. It sounds like you may have an air pocket in the cooling system. Have you had any recent work on the car and the antifreeze drained?

The most recent work on the car was a muffler patching. I should mention I don't have AC. I haven't had any work done on the cooling system in a while. It's been overheating at odd times; had mechanics look at it about a year ago, and they found nothing wrong.

This morning, it started to overheat, and I turned the heat on, and warm air came out. But this afternoon, it's cold air coming out.

Ok, have you checked the coolant level to be sure it is full?

Not yet. I'll do that before I drive it again. Any other helpful hints of things I might want to check in relation to this?

Yes, no problem. Does it overheat only when sitting still, or while driving? Or both?

Both. But more so when I'm sitting still.

Ok, do this for me and let me know the results. Take your time. Start the car and leave the a/c off, turn the heat wide open and remove the radiator cap. Let the engine warm up to around 1/2 way on the gauge. Raise the hood and see if the cooling fan mounted on the radiator is running. Then shut the car off, add coolant if necessary and replace the radiator cap. This will check 2 things.

1. This will get any trapped air out of the system.

2. This will check to see if the cooling fan system is working.

Let me know.

The fan did come on, but the levels of coolant are low. I'll fill it up and see what happens.

Thanks for all your help.

Ok, let me know. If the coolant continues to get low, you might need to have a pressure test performed on the cooling system. If that looks ok, have a leakdown test on each cylinder to check for a leaking head gasket.

You are most welcome. Yell if you need me.
