Question

Hello. I have a cat that is an exotic shorthair. He has been fine but just today I noticed he seems to have a bit of loose stool. He has been to the litter box 3 times in about 3 hours going to the bathroom. It is not watery stool but like pancake batter. I am a little worried about it because just about 6 months ago his brother from the same litter passed away from FIP. His activity level is normal he is eating and drinking fine and running around like crazy. He is a very high strung boy but you can see my concern. He is over 18 months now and it was 6 months ago his brother passed on. I know he has not gotten into anything unusual so not sure why all of a sudden this started today. Any ideas and should I be concerned that he may have developed this FIP? Thank you. Rachael.

Answer

Hello. Rachael. Thanks for writing in. It kind of sounds like he has inflammation of the colon (clolitis). This is usually due to dietary causes, but can come about due to stress, intestinal parasites and other internal organ problems (liver, kidney, pancreas). Being that he is eating well and running around, I would be very suprised if this is FIP. Most likely,. he has the same coronavirus that mutates into FIP, but it only does so in 5-10% of the cats infected with it. I would still recommend getting him into your vet for some bloodwork and fecal exam to be on the safe side. Hopefully, all he will need is some antibiotics and possible dewormer. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

So maybe this is just something else....would it be common for a cat to just have an episode of lose stool like this and go back to normal. I guess I am so affraid of the FIP virus since it took his brother that I had only for one year that the sight of the lose stool sends me into a panic. I am taking him in tommorow just as a precaution. I have also given him some hairball medicine not sure if that helps for not but thought why not. He was just in the vet 4 months ago for a checkup and they said he looked and was just great. Do you think it is just something I can actualy fight? Fip I learned I could not do a thing. Thanks.

Hello again. Like I said, I would be suprised if this was FIP, but you need to get him checked out as a precaution for sure. It is possible that this is just an upset stomach and will pass, but I would still get him on some medications for the diarrhea. FIP is really one of the few cat diseases that you cannot do anything about. With what you are describing, I have a good feeling that you will be able to get him over this within the next few day. Hope this helps.
