I am the President of the French Wars Veterans Association in Washington and I would like to file for company exempt in 2009. Could you tell me how I should proceed.

Hello pierre,

To apply for recognition by the IRS of exempt status under section 501(c) of the Internal Revenue Code, your organization needs to file Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption, with the IRS.

Here is a link to an IRS web page which describes the guidelines that must be met in order to be treated as a non taxable fraternal organization.
