Question

What is the rabies vaccination effective period. We are moving to Japan and have completed FAVN and three rabies vaccinations over the past three years and have dog microchiped. But I see that our dogs first rabies vaccination was 3/22/07 and second 4/2/09. Is this out of the effective period and will our dog have 180 days quarantine in Japan?

Hello,
No, not necessarily 180 days. However, you may be required to do 1 more Rabies vaccination.

Carefully, review this article and discuss it with your primary veterinarian. In addition, ask your vet for the contact information of a local USDA vet, who can assist in these matters.

If the first vaccine in 2007 was labeled as a 3 year vaccine, and not a 1 year vaccine, you may be okay. Note how it says that the second vaccine must be greater than 30 days after the first, but also must be within the time frame that the first hasn't expired. therefore, your 3/22/2007 vaccine would expire 3/22/2010, which is fine.

The paperwork must be flawless. That's the key.
