Question

Hello,

I have a neutered 8 year old moggie, who has lived most of his life with an older neutered female cat. he was put to sleep earlier this year and we subsequently moved house. I have also recently aquired 2 male kittens who the older cat tolerates quite well after an initial few days of hissing and being grumpy.

My question is twofold:
1. One of the kittens will happily use a litter tray and the garden but does still both poo and wee in the house (not using the well maintained litter trays provided). How can stop this? We live in a rented house and this behaviour cannot go on!
2. The older cat willoccasionally spray mark, which I understad ould be down to the recent chages he has gone thrugh. Would Feliway help? He marks odd things - a carrier bag, my partnrs newly washed coat, my mum's leg!

Advice needed. Is this a problem because there are 3 male cats together?

Hello, XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Are the kittens neutered yet? How old are the kittens now?

Hi

The kittens are now 4.5 months old, so not neutered yet. We've had them about 6 weeks.

Thank you for the extra information.

They are old enough to get neutered, and at 4.5 months they need it. They are right on the edge of puberty. This will cause the "need" to go outside the litter box.

When you have one cat, there is a 25% chance he or she will use the bathroom outside the litter box at some point.

When you get 2 cats that goes up to 75% chance someone will, and 3 cats near 100%.

So yes the more cats you have the worse the behavior gets.

Yes Feliway will help.

This is a pheromone spray that helps cats with aggression, territorial issues, and anxiety. You can spray it on surfaces they have previously urinated or pooped on. You can also get it in an electric plug in that puts the pheromone into the air called Comfort Zone. You can get this at Pet Smart or most larger pet supply stores.

You should add a second or third litter box.
Many times cats do not like to urinate in the same box they defecate in. Nor do cats like to share litter boxes either sometimes. It always a good rule of thumb to follow this formula (n+1= number of litter boxes) N= number of cats in house.

You can use a litter called cat attract. Attract Litter is designed to make it easier to get cats of all ages trained or re-trained to use the litter box. You can get this a petsmart, petco, and larger pet supply stores.

Very important to clean the areas that has been marked. You need to use a enzyme odor eliminating cleaner such as nature's miracle. Regular cleaner such as Lysol will not work as good. They will keep going to the same spots because they smell their own scent and the scent from the others. When a cat smells the scent of another cat's urine they instinctively want to cover it with their own scent. You must get rid of the scent. Nature's miracle also makes a cat only formula now.

Sincerely, XXXXX
