Question

I have a 1992 Corvette LT1 - not ZR1 - The car ingnition system has started to engage intermitently - this past weekend I removed the starter, alternator and battery - all 3 tested good - after removal and installation the car started (although I had to turn the ignition several time before the starter kicked in). Once started I took the car for about a 20 mile ride (car ran great) and returned to the garage, turned engine off and tried to start at which point no response. Could the the neutral start switch be defective and cause this problem.

Haven't really noticed but I think it does

If so, the problem is with the antitheft system, namely the chip in your ignition key. If that is the case, it comes down to dirty contacts, a worn key or a worn ignition lock cylinder. What I recommend you try first is if you have 2 sets of keys, switch to the other set. Use a pencil eraser and clean the pellet in the ignition key. See if the problem continues after that and if so, let me know and I'll recommend replacing the ignition lock cylinder or bypassing the system. Let me know what happens.

You are welcome, I have a 91 and have been there. I have spent 6 minutes in front of a Chinese food resturaunt, waiting for the antitheft timer to reset and allow me to start the my vette and of course you can't look broken down in the process, you have to look like your doing something until it lets you start it. Let me know what happens

Hi Ivan,

The problem has recently resurfaced, the problem persists after using an eraser on either key. When I turn the ignition key a clicking sound is heard then eventually the starter engages (the length of time between starts is increasing). What would you recommendation be replacing the ignition lock cylinder or bypassing the system? How difficult is it to replace the cylinder? I see you are located in New Jersey - I'm originally from New Jersey (Somerville)- my dad (Fred Vogt - now deceased) taught auto mechanics at Somerset Vocational/Technical , I also have a friend (Wesley Lane) who collects vettes located somewhere in your area although I haven't spoken with him in many years. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer

I'm here to help as long as you need me. I think you may have a bad starter. There is a large and small terminal on your starter. When it doesn't start, check for power on the small terminal when you turn the key to start. If you have power there, you have confimed a bad stater. Let me know what you find.

Ivan,

I've checked the battery which is getting a strong connection and when I check the circuit by grounding to the chassis and touching the small connector on the starter it shows power, in your opion do you think the starter is bad - Thanks
