Do autistic people have lack of common sense?

Answer

Hello 7479c - thanks for visiting.

I have to consider for a moment - what is common sense? Your definition and mine might be very different!

However, that fact is that people suffering from autism have a different world view and reaction to the situations in which they find themselves to those who do not have autism.

Autism is not a single, clearcut entity. It is a spectrum of disorder, along which any sufferer has his or her own specific place. No-one can say with any real certainty what causes autism, but people who have it seem to respond differently to social and emotional cues to those who don't.

They can appear withdrawn, insensitive and unconnected. That does not mean that they lack common sense. It is just a fact that they perceive their world and their social interactions differently to others, through a special 'filter' of their own, and therefore they act and react sometimes in ways that people may think strange.

So common sense - no, they don't lack it - they just have their own special version, which we don't understand!
