Hello,
I am so sorry your little hamster died! I know it is hard on the kids. A hamster for Childern that age can be a problem pet. Hamsters from petshops are often ill and usually not monitored for health quality. At that age of your your children, I usually will suggest more of a watching pet like a small aquarium with fish rather than a pet like a hamster, gerbil or Guinea pig. The kids can take part in the feeding and sit and watch the fish. Most rodents can be agressive and have very sharp teeth which can be traumatizing for a child if bitten. If you decide to go with a fish, you will need a proper set up with filtration, food and lighting. They too can be entertaining as well as a great learning experience for the kids. I have great disdain for Pet shops as for them, it is all about selling tghe pet and supplies for high dollar amounts and not taking the situation into consideration.Joan
