Question

I have a Nelson in-ground sprinkler system about 17 years old. Zone 1 was working OK, but the others (5 total) didn't spray, just leaked when they were turned on. Zone 2 worked for a while, but when I tested the rest it stopped working and so did zone 1. So now none of them work, but they do leak water when turned on. I assume I have a valve or solenoid problem, but I'm not sure how to check that. I am reasonably sure there are no underground pipe breaks--there is no puddling, and I have fixed problems like that before.

I can locate two cans in the system that are close to each other and labelled valve. I can hear water gushing through one of them and nothing at the other.

Any ideas?

5 zones, 1 inch PVC pipes, spray heads that rise and extend under pressure. City water, not particularly hard as far as I am aware.

Answer

OK .. so if the water pressure is not affected in the house .. then I would suspect that you have gotten some debris in the control solenoid valves .. maybe you noticed some discolored water recently .. ?? you could dismantle a solenoid valve and see what is going on inside ..

Yes, you can see from my original post that I suspect a solenoid and/or valve issue. I appreciate your time in reading and responding to my query, but it hasn't really helped me yet. I described the two valve cans in the yard. They are identical and about three feet apart. I assume they route the water pressure from one zone to the next. I can hear rushing water (but jittery--like maybe there is an obstruction in there) from one can and nothing from the other can.

Inside the cans I can see the PVC pipe. On top of that is what I assume is the valve assembly--there is a circular disc, out of which a smaller circular column rises--this little column has a cap that can be turned to release a little stream of water. Next to this is a larger, thicker plastic part that I can turn. It has two wires going to it. I haven't turned it hard yet because I haven't turned off the water yet. But can I assume that this is the solenoid? Should I try to take it out and root around in there to find some debris?

Or do I need to dig up the whole valve box?

I realize it will be hard to answer this, but please give me any tips you can and I will accept it.

Thanks.

OK .. the column with the wires is the solenoid of the valve .. the valve body is the circular part ... probably has about 6t or 8 screws around the edge .. turn the water off and thes unscrew the screws and remove the top of the valve .,., there will be a spring inside and a diaphragm .. the water may drain back thru the open top of the valve .. just wait a few minutes for it to stop and for the valve can to drain out .. inside the valve body you may see debris, silt, sand, rust , whatever .. this should be cleaned out .. and the valve reassembled .. then if it does not improve ,, you can change out the solenoid part .. just take the wires apart and unscrew the solenoid and srew in a new one .. take the old one to the supply store to get a replacement .. any thoughts, questions .. please get back toe
