Question

I recently renovated an unfinished second floor attic space. It has a low sloped ceiling with just insulated rafters and an asphalt shingles above. I would say it has questionable ventilation. The finished ceiling is painted tongue and groove pine. In the summer and particularly on hot humid days the ceiling surface that runs along the ridgeline becomes saturated with water to the point where it will drip onto the floor.

I sense that I need to improve the venting. My question to you is how does this moisture form? Why does this happen in the summer, but not during the winter? We live in a cold winter climate and I am familiar with condensation/dewpoints as they relate to warm moist air contacting cold surfaces. Obviously in this case, we have the moisture, but instead of extreme cold the surface of the ceiling, particularly along the ridgeline, is extremely hot. Can you explain what is happening?

Did you install air conditioning into the new space. If so, where are the vents located, in the floor or ceiling? Does this problem occur when the air conditioning is running? Does your existing air conditioning have a humidifier installed on it.

There is no air conditioning. There is no humidifier. There is nothing cold associated with this event. In fact it is just the opposit, the ceiling where this moisture appears is quite hot.

Are your soffits vented? Were air flow baffles installed between the insulation and roof deck (deck = what the shingles are nailed to could be plywood or 1x4 or 1x6 planks etc..). Does your roof have a ridgevent installed.

The soffits are vented. The ridge line was not vented until recently. The vent seems to have cured the problem. My question was more of a why thing then a how to fix thing. Perhaps this has more to do with science then building.

Why was warm moist air turning into water droplets on a hot wood ceiling surface .

Accepted Answer

When roofs aren't vented they trap moisture. That moisture collects on surfaces. What you were experiencing was probably moisture build up not condensation. That would explain why the ridge vent cured the problem.
