Question
I have a onan emerald 1 generator. It starts ok but surges or hunts for run rpm. Adjusting carburetor doesnt make any difference. It sat for a long time. Could the carburetor be the problem? Also checked linkage on govenor.

The surging is most likely a gummed up carburetor. Adjusting the needles will do no good if the jets are plugged up. I would remove the carb and completely disassemble it. Soak all of the metal parts in a dip can of carb cleaner for 1 hour. You will then want to clean all of the parts in soapy water and them dry them good. It may need a rebuild kit since the gaskets usually tear when you take the carb apart. Put it back together and then you should be good to go with a little fine tuning of the adjustment screws. Most of them are set at 1 1/2 turns open from lightly seated as a starting point.
