Question

I purchased an 88 Siera by Cobra, when I arrived at home with it an hour and a half later the drain hoses were gone. I had a couple of holes in each tank and nothing but a broken strap hanging where the hose used to be. Now the problem, I have not had antything to do with rv's for thirty years, I purchased this one and stripped it down to the frame and have started painting and re-building it the wat I want it. I am thinking of just using one tank for the holding and black water. Is this legal?

No I am replacing the 28 gal fresh tank with a 40 gal new one. I have the old black and grey tanks but they are shatterd at the end that had the fittings for draining the tanks. I am thinking about just replacing both of them with one tank. This will cut the fittings cost in half.

Answer

OK

Very good question... This has actually been accomplished by some RV manufacturers. Nowadays it is generally not acceptable to dump gray water under any circumstances so a few RVs are being built with one combination gray/black tank. The advantage is mostly to the builder because there is less plumbing to do. But the combination tanks are necessarily larger and it is hard to find a place for them so most RVs still have two tanks.. I am not aware of any codes and this is an older unit which would be to your benefit... I personally would go with 2 tanks but I understand your position.....IF you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact me..

Well I am rebuilding from the wheels up so I think I will be going with a single tank as the price is about the same for all of thier tanks, so it will cut my tank cost in half. is there any way to repair the old tanks?

Accepted Answer

OK

Another expert contacted me and advised against doing the single tank. He says it is against health code and you run the risk of putting sewage in the shower... I know in the past manufacturers have done this, I do not know what special valves were installed to make it legal. The tanks can be plastic welded it takes specialty equipment in order to weld plastics. Some RV repair facilities may have the equipment and camping world might be able to do it. I think doing the two tanks is the best option it would be allot of work to install a tank to find out there are issues....

Thanks, Robert
