Question

My Husband and I put down a new sod about a month ago. There are some areas that are growing rampent and others that died instantly and yet other parts where it was doing amazing and now its dying fast. What are we doing wrong? The grass was growing fast then it seemed to lighten in color and almost thin out, all within a couple of days. What can I do to save it?

Answer

Newly laid sod needs to be watered virtually every day. The problems you've described sound as if the new sod didn't get adequate water. You might be able to save it by watering the heck out of it right away and continually.

We water it once a day, at night. You suggest twice a day?

Accepted Answer

The key is not when you water or even how often. The key is the "amount." If your hand watering with a hose or hose spray you won't be putting out the volume needed and should use a sprinkler that can allow watering for a couple of hours at least twice a day. New sod simply takes a tremendous amount of water at the beginning.
