Question

We have a 1987 Volvo 240 DL with 5 speed manual transmission. It will not shift into reverse. The reverse shift is a pull up mechanical device on the gear shift knob. This device moves freely as if not connected now. How hard is it to disassemble and repair? What needs to be done? Thank you. Bill

My son's car will see him in the morning.   We think a pin or spring may have come loose and not allowing us to shift into reverse. Is there a way we can disassemble the reverse linkage on the gear shift lever and fix it. We need the car back in service tomorrow.

Accepted Answer

XXXXXXXX, there is a plastic rod that connects the shift lock knob on the shifter to the lower lock out piece, they break. you can remove the shift knob and loof down inside the shifter to see if it is connected to the knob, otherwise you will need to remove the shifter boot to check the other end.

there are 4 clips, 2 in front and 2 in rear under the carpet for the boot. if you find the rod broken it is a dealer item, or a volvo specialist might still stock one. you will have to remove the shifter shaft, this is down by removing the pin just under the shift boot, you will see a rubber grommet inside that grommet is a pin, you will need a small punch and hammer to start it the you can usually use a pair of pliers to remove it.
the shift knob pulls ff, but usually not easily.

Answer is good and will be very helpful. You had advertised that it usually tool less than 2 hours for a response. This response took over 12 hours. Recommend you remove the 2 hour comment as it raises false expectations. Thank you.
