Question

Hello, I have a 1991 Toyota 4runner V6 4x4 with 550,000 miles on a rebuilt engine. I have an oil leak coming from the front under the crankshaft just above the oil pan. I have already realized that I may have to change all the seals and timing belt however, I would like to ask a question about the oil pump as a possible problem before I dismantling the front of the engine.
Questions:
1.     Can you access the oil pump or inspect it and its hoses for leaks when I remove the front crankshaft timing cover?
2.     If there is a problem with the oil pump of any of its attachments may it be easy to access with or without going through the front crankshaft timing cover such as dropping the oil pan?
I don’t want to spend too much money on the vehicle being that it might be on its last voyage. It is also leaks a lot of oil when its oil volume is in reasonable level and only from the above mentioned location.

The oil pump drive gears are built into the front oil pump aluminum housing which bolts to the front of the motor and to the front of the oil pan. There are no hoses that can leak. The only sealing surfaces are the gasket between the cast-iron block in the aluminum housing and the crankshaft seal itself. This gasket is not known to leak although with the mileage that you have it's hard to say. More than likely what you'll find is that the crank seal which is behind the drive gear for the timing belt is probably bad. Normally just replacing this crank seal will take care of your oil leak. There is a possibility that you also need cam shaft seals. If the gasket between the oil pump housing is leaking you will need to remove the oil pan in order to remove the front oil pump housing assembly to replace this gasket.
