Question

I was driving my 2008 XLE camry and i was reaching for my Ipod in the compartment when reaching for it i hit the Shift nob and it threw the car in reverse. no warning lights came on at the time and still there are none on. i took it in and 3 mechanics said there is no way the car could have done that it's too smart there are safety features for that. Now they are charging us 4,000 dollars for a new transmission when i understand i accidentally did it but why should i pay if the mechanics were all blown away that the car actually tried going in reverse. We had high hopes for buying the car out from the lease but now this is disappointing because if the car is not going to have a button on the shift knob i think that a safety feature should be installed or a computer error on the car.

Info Request

Is this a 4 or 6 cylinder camry?
How many miles are on it?
Do you currently have it at a Toyota dealer or an independant shop?

This is a 4 cylinder and it just hit 30,000. i am just a student in school and i was not screwing around i have never crashed a car. it just went into reverse and the Technician wanted me to drive it in luckily i paid to have it towed in there or it would have got worse but there are no warning lights on and nothing came on. a cop watched it happen and pulled behind me and asked what happened and he even thought it was easy thing to do as an accident and that i did nothing i was driving in city limits.

Accepted Answer

The reason I ask is that because YES this is an electronically controlled transmisssion. If you try to shift from reverse to drive or drive to reverse when the car is in motion it stalls the engine, my wife has a 2008 4 cylinder and learned this the hard way, it will stall out on you of you shift when still in motion.
The thing here is that the car is still under the full warranty as well as the powertrain warranty. I would not have mentioned anything about the reverse issue as they cannot prove anything more then the transmission is damaged (or so they claim).
I would definately contact toyota's corporate headquarters on this one, the customer relations department is 1-800-331-4331

My mom has contacted that department today and a case manager is calling her back tomorrow. Hopefully we have luck. When Toyota hooked it up to the computer they said the car defiantly tried going in reverse. Do you think by contacting them they will let this go and cover it? what are other possible options?

Answer

You had no reason for telling them that you thought this was your fault, it's not you telling a lie, it's just you not telling them what happened. If they can't prove it then we can't hold you liable. I have cars in my shop all the time that both I and my customer know they did something to cause a problem but unless there is obvious evidence I have to assume that it is a defect and cover it under warranty. I would raise hell with them if they give you a hard time.
