Question

Why does my cat get small jelly like globules in/on her eyes? I can see the globule in her eye and if I dont remove it, I have found it rubbed off on to my bed or sofa. Is this normal? Most of the time I leave it, but it just moves to the corner of her eye. My cat is called Mitzi, she is a british shorthair, white, female, with green eyes, aged 12. No illnesses at the moment. She has pink ears and nose and pads. Sometimes the fur around her eyes go a little brown. I look forward to hearing from you in due course. Best Wishes, XXXXX XXXXXXXX (Miss, UK).

I have noticed her having it for the last 2 months, appx, may be a little longer, no Mitzi isnt rubbing her eyes, there is no redness or pus. The eyes dont look watery. One day it is in one eye, and then 3 days later I will notice it in her other eye, but the same size blob. Jayne

Hi there,

If the eyes themselves are not causing an irritation to your cat or look infected, the chances are that this is a collection of the normal tear film and discharge rpoduced by the eye and the surrounding tissues. Usually, if there is a problem with the eye itself, you often see a coloured sicharge of white or greeny-yellow, suggesting an infection present.

Clear or jelly-like discharge without any other change to the appearance of the eyes or any change in nehaviour from the cat os generally not something to be concerned about as long as nothing develops from it. The cat's eye produced tear film made up of different tyoes of fluid from different areas of the eye and a change in composition of this fluid, a higher proportion of the more viscous portion or a reduction in grooming by the cat so these things seem more obvious. The fact that your cat is a british shorthair may also contribute to this because the drainage of tears may be reduced due to the sohrt face and likely narrower tear duct in these 'flatter-faced' breeds.

If you have noticed something out of the prdinary with any pet it is worthwhile having the eyes checked woth your vet, but I'm not overly worried by what you have described - this may be something that just needs watching to make sure nothing else develops.

I hope this helps,

Jen
