Question

When I eat bananas I get a very sharp pain in my esophagus. I have been eating bananas everyday for several weeks. All of a sudden a few days ago when I eat one it feels like it gets stuck or swells. I don't have a problem eating any other type of food. But I have had the same symptoms in the past when I've eaten fried pork skins.

No heart burn, trust me I know what that feels like. It just feels like the banana swells. While this is happening everytime I try to swollow it hurts even more. I wondering since I have been eating so many of them that I might have developed an allergy to them.

Answer

Hi,
Its not a sign of any allergy to bananas.Because there should also be some rash or vomiting alongwith it.What I am suspecting that probably there is small benign growth called polyp is developing in oesophagus which causes such sensation when you eat bulk containing foods like bananas or pork meat but not with purees. However somtimes such sensation do occur when you are extremely depressed but this I am not suspecting in your case.Better to consult your physician for a proper check up.However you can try taking tab Gaviscon twice aday before meals for 10 days.

There is a sensation to vomit, but I never do completely. I have a lot of saliva forcing it's way into my mouth. This morning I had a few chewed up pieces of banana with it.

Accepted Answer

Still we cannot relate it to allergy to bananas as its not fitting completely with it.It can be a form of indigestion like oesophageal reflux disorder which is seen when the lowersphincter of oesophagus dont contract and food regurges in mouth .This is especially seen with bananas and cucumber somtimes also with Aspargus.Only treatment option is that you take tab Gaviscon twice a Day for 10 days .If problem persisit then consult your physician.
