Question

I have been diagnosed with a ruptured muscle in my abdominal wall and have had it for over 2 years now. The pain does not seem to be getting any better and sometimes I feel it getting worse. It is not constant and I might get 1-2 weeks of the month relatively pain free. However, days before, the week of and for over a week after my period the pain is somewhat unbearable. I cannot wear my usual clothing and have to opt for leggings and baggy tops. I find it extremely difficult to continue on my everyday activities. I have a 2 year old and it really upsets me that I struggle at times to play with her. I have given up my gym classes, jogging and many other activities because it just agrivates it more. I have had an ultrasound scan to confirm that there is something there. I have been to the doctors 3 times now asking if there is anything that can be done for the pain but they say time will heal it but it really isnt getting better. Is there really nothing that canj be done :(

I have been to the docs several times.
Paracetamol, ibroprofen and cocodamol do not 'touch' the pain. I have kidney disease and high blood pressure so I have to watch what medication I take.

HI, Thanks for your question today at Just Answer. I am sorry to hear that you are having such problems. Chrnonic pain is frustrating, debilitating, and exhausting.

Did your doctor mention any kind of abdominal binder? This would help stabilize the muscles, and would help reduce any swelling or inflammation that is occuring. this is particularly helpful for moms who do lots of bending over and picking up. I use this with my new moms in my midwifery clinic and binders work well for this population. You can buy some over the counter, but it is best to get a prescription one and have it fitted for your specific need.

My guess is that during your period, you are experiencing worsening pain because of the increased blood flow to the area. This can, indeed, be terrible pain, and you need to insist on better pain management.

Has surgery to repair the ruptured muscle been discussed? Two years is a very long time to heal, if it hasn't completely healed by now, you may need a surgical repair or a graft of some kind.

I would strongly suggest you seek a second opinion, it sounds like your doctor is just not listening to you. No one should have to suffer like this for two years and not get better pain relief. In addition to seeking another opinion from a surgeon, I would also strongly suggest you ask for a referral to a pain specialist. Pain specialists are up to date on the latest treatments for pain and will usually be pretty aggressive for pain control. You deserve to be able to talk with someone like that and see if they can help. Your primary care physician or nurse practitioner may need to write a referral.

Unfortunately, it can be stressful to deal with the medical system. You need to be firm, and insistent, and don't back down! You need a second opinion, a pain specialist, and at the very least, some better pain management from your doctor. But since that doctor hasn't done anything or listened to your concerns for 2 years, I would personally be done with them.

I hope this answer is helpful. I am sorry I don't have more to offer. There are treatments out there for this problem, including surgery, belly binders, physical therapy, and pain control.

I wish you the best! Please feel free to ask further questions. I will be online throughout the day and can answer further questions, clarify, or expand anything I've said.

Please dont forget to click "accept" after reading my answer, it's the only way I am paid for my time and work. Your question value is: $15.03 today. Of course, bonuses and positive feedback are always appreciated!
