Question

I think my sugar glider has an upper respiratory infection. She is sneezing occasionally and there is a little discharge around her nose. She has swelling under one eye, not severe but there is a little swelling. She seems to be eating fine, maybe not playing as much. She got in a fight with another female sugar glider but they have been separated from each other.

Hello,

Your sugar glider will need to be seen by a vet. It's not unusual to have to travel for an hour or two to reach an exotic animal vet. this link will take you to a directory that will help you find the nearest one:

http://www.aemv.org/vetlist.cfm

The antibiotic most commonly used is Baytril. It's not available without a prescription. It isn't safe to use farm antibiotics on small animals. Many of the small animal species react adversely to common antibiotics. Some can even be fatal.

A respiratory infection can quickly turn serious, but from your description, you're not dealing with an emergency situation at this point. What I would do is check the directory I gave above for the nearest vet. If all of them are too far for you, contact your local vets once more. Ask them if they would be willing to work by phone consultation with an exotics vet. This is frequently done in remote areas.

To support your sugar glider in the meantime, Run a vaporizer or nebulizer in her room. Continue the warmth and feeding fruit that you already started. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope your sugar glider will quickly recover.
