I have not tried anything because I don't want to buy something OTC and then have her get worse. She is on a daily vitamin, that's all...

Dear Eve,

Did this just start today?

If you look at her rectal area is it red or swollen? Do you see any tapeworms around her rectum? The tapeworms look like grains of rice. The tapeworms are also on the feces when the dogs defacate.

Is she itching at her ears or rubbing her face?

In your other post you said she is licking he feet too right?

no, the treat has been given to her for about a month. She has to be fed by hand, she will not eat on her own...

Accepted Answer

I believe she has allergies.

If she does not have fleas and is allergic to flea saliva, then she is allergic to something in her food or treats or she has atopy. Atopy is inhalant allergies.

To determine if it is food allergy the patient is put on a hypo allergenic diet (hills z/d) for 4-6 weeks. During this time you can not give any other food or treats. Doing so will ruin the test. After 4-6 weeks the patient is put back on the regular diet. If the skin flares up again you know food allergens are the cause of the skin problems.

Atopy is when the patient has become allergic to normal substances such as pollen, mold, and dust mites. The symptoms can be controlled and prevented but it can not be cured. There is a blood test that can be done to see what she is allergic to. If desired she can be given allergy shots to hyposensitize her to the allergens. The allergry shots are 50-75% affective.

You can try benadryl at a dose of 1mg per pound of body weight every 6-8 hours as needed. You can also spray hydrocortisone spray on the affected areas 3-4 times a day to help control the itching.

I am thinking she also has blocked up or infected anal glands. The tissue surrounding her anal glands most likely became inflammed because of her allergies. Then the ducts that drain the glands became blocked. This can be painful and I am wondering if that is why she will not eat. It causes the dogs to lick back there and scoot across the floor. The vet will drain the glands and put her on antibiotics if they are infected.
