Question

We recently went out of town for a week and had a neighbor watch our dog and 1 yr old spayed female Ragdoll cat. The cat had never shown an ounce of aggression attacked the house sitter the second day she was there and she ended up keeping her in a spare bedroom for the rest of the week. Now we have been back for 2 weeks and the cat is very aggressive-biting , scratching, chasing, my 11 and 13 yr old children. Eye contact seems to set her off. What is going on and what can we do to stop this behavior?

The breeder recomended placing the children's worn clothing where she sleeps, having the children feed her instead of me. Try not to approach her and do not make eye contact. She also told us to have them interact with her in a fun way with a cat toy (the kind on the end of a stick to stay a safe distance.) And to just give her time and space. We have done all of this. The only time the cat tolerates them is when I am holding her so they can pet her. She has been fine with me. Maybe just a bit more aloof than usual. I am afraid she is ruined. She was such a nice cat before our vacation.

Hello. Thanks for writing in. Unfortunately, stress can really cause cats to "hold a grudge" for a long time. The things your breeder recommended are all good but they may take some time. I would try getting some Feliway from your local petstore. This is a synthetic cat pheromone that can relieve anxiety. If need be, you might have to resort to getting soem anti-anxiety medications from your vet and medicating her for a little while, until she can get over this. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.
