The P0411 code is a secondary air injection code. What is "acting strange"?
Does it run poorly first thing in the morning?

car is running rough and there is a muffled sound and sometimes you have to pump brakes to work

Answer

The brake pedal is harder than normal...
A vacuum leak is the likely cause under the intake manifold or in the main vacuum supply line to the brake booster. I am suprised that no other codes are present if that is the case.
There are several larger vacuum lines that have a tendency to split lengthwise and will leak off and on.
Listen for a sucking noise near the manifold, or use a smokemachine to inject smoke into the intake to pinpoint the leak.
If no leak is heard, or if other codes are present, let me know. Jason

Jason I found numerous old vacuum lines that needed to be replaced and I did so and the car runs a lot better. There was another code before it was P0420. I cleared it and drove the car for about forty minutes and the code came back, I know this is the code for a bad cat convert or O2 sensor. I have replaced both front and back o2 sensor about six months ago, could it be the cat converter. The car has 130000miles. Thoughts?

Accepted Answer

The P0420 is for Catalyst efficiency.
A common failure is the Catalyst itself.
If you replaced the pre and post sensors, I would say the Cat can no longer preform up to spec...
A lab scope can graph the rear sensor following the front sensor with little difference, the rear should be much slower in its graph if the cat is working properly.
I can say that a VW OEM catalyst will be required. The Aftermarket cats do not have enough of the rare metals needed to convert up to the VW standards. Almost every aftermarket cat I have tried has caused the same code to return, the P0420.
I have fought the manufacturers and sellers of these cats several times, often a new customer will come in with this code, been to several different shops with no satisfaction. I tell them that they need a cat, and alot of times they get mad and I have to prove it to them, as they JUST had a cat installed by the other shops. I have a large file just on these cases to prove to them the results.
If ALL the vacuum leaks have been cured, I would suspect the cat.

Paste this to your browser and Clapp VW parts will have a decent price on the Cat. A freind of mine has used them while traveling and they treated him well.
They are a dealership, but the prices aren't blown up...
Now I am not knocking all aftermarket cats, and It cant hurt to try a good one. Just let who you buy it from know that if the code is persistant, you will want a moneyback guarantee. It seems the higher the price, the better the cats internals are, of course.
If the car is from California, I would stick to the VW Cat.
The VW will make sure the O2 sensors are good before running the CAT test after clearing codes. These readiness codes are a state of health confirmation.
I have had to prove this to the local parts and muffler stores, and usually get a handshake when I am done.
Thanks for using us again, and let me know.
Jason
