Question

I have a 2001 V70 XC with ±200,000 miles with RPM issues. It idles at 600 to 650 rpms and the tach needle bounces around like a pin ball while driving. Prior to the most recent repair after some miles the engine would just die at low RPMs. My mechanic just replaced the TPS sensor assembly and throttle switch. The problem is back. There is no coding for the throttle control or air mass meter.   The throttle control was replaced on the call back (50,000 miles) and the air mass meter was recently replaced.

Answer

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, sounds like you need to start with cleaning the throttle module. also check for vacuum leaks and make sure pcv system is working properly.
neve heard of anyone being able to replace the tps and throttle switch on the a 01 with electronic throttle, short of replacing the whole throttle module.

The only question I have is why wouldn't a vacuum leak or the pcv system code out?

Answer

no codes for pcv system. most of the time you will get a fuel trim code for a vacuum leak. the symtoms your describing are a dirty or bad throttle unit

The problem disappeared for a week after replacing the TPS sensor and throttle switch. If there is pcv problem or vacuum leak why would the RPM problem go away? Unless they are not the problem and like you said it is in the trottle unit.....$$$$$

Accepted Answer

are you sure he replaced just the sensor and switch.
the TPS are non serviceable and there is no throttle switch in that system.
adaptations reset when last work was done and it has relearned its bad ways.
