Question

Our Labrador, we think is in pain from Arthritis. She is limping occassionally and has a lump at the shoulder joint. We have put her to bed and she periodically barks.
What can we give her for some pain relief?

How long has this been going on for? Does she have a history of joint pain or stiffness?

She has limped just occassionally for a cple of weeks but when we have taken her for her walks she seems ok. She has had no problems during her walks but tonight I let her come inside but she wouldn't walk on the tile floor? She has just gone back outside as she usually sleeps in the laundry but she wanted to go out!

Has her appetite been normal? Is the lump on the shoulder very new?

She has been eating as normal. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago and asked my husband to get our vet out to look at her but he thought the lump was probably the same as she has on her lower abdomen. Our vet last time when he checked Tara said that the lump on her stomach was just fatty tissue. I think tonight after feeling it , I think is is larger!
I have also noticed that at times she will not step up on our kitchen step - I have to entice her up.

Is the lump soft like the lump on her abdomen, or is it harder/firmer?

It feels the same as her stomach and is the size of a table tennis ball. Slightly spongy to feel but harder in the centre.

OK, thanks. It's possible that this lump is putting pressure on nerves or muscles in the area, and therefore contributing to the limping, but it's also possible that it's completely unrelated. Since arthritis is rather common in labradors as they age, it's not surprising that she may be starting to experience some of that -- but I think the smartest thing is to have your veterinarian perform an aspirate of the lump and also to examine the lame leg for any signs of problems such as a bone tumor, which can really have a devastating course even with early treatment. Bone tumors are relatively rare compared to arthritis, but it's still worth investigating in most cases.

As for over-the-counter pain relief, a lot of old-time vets recommend aspirin, but the problem with aspirin is that it can cause ulcers even after the first dose in dogs -- and it also may limit your veterinarian's choices for prescription meds, due to the risk of drug interactions. I don't routinely recommend aspirin for use in dogs.

The hot compress is a good thought, if it's nice and hot, and applied for 15-20 minutes, then it should provide some relief. Be sure it's not too hot, of course -- if it's too hot for your skin it will be too hot for hers.
