Question

My daughter's pet rabbit jumped out of her arms and landed on a tiled floor, tearing out his front claw. There was a small amount of bleeding and Bugs seems to be in shock. What is the best for him? Should I put antibiotic cream on the wound? Should it be wrapped?

Thanks for the question Mr Cooper.

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following :

1. I have known this happen from time to time in the consulting room as some rabbits can be difficult to hold and jump and scrabble about. This is not a serious injury and it will almost certainly resolve whatever you do, the bleeding normally stops in a short time. The nail will grow back by the way ...

2. The best thing to do here would be to wash the affected foot in warm salt water twice a day, dry it with a clean piece of kitchen towel and then dab a little bit of any antiseptic cream on to the exposed portion of nail stump. Do this until the nail stump looks healed over, this could take three or four days.

3. Of course if it looks infected you should have your vet take a look but that would be unlikely.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
