Question

The IRS has asked for a bank record and letters from a qualified charitable organization (in this case a church). I have these and will provide. The time period is April to June 2006. Wouldn't the church have also filed with the IRS to provide another record of these contributions? Thank you.

Hello steve,

The church would have filed a return as a non profit organization, and they would report the total contributions they received for the year from all sources, but they do not break this down by how much was given by each individual donor.

All the church does is provide you with the receipt, and it is then up to you to claim that deduction on your return, and to provide the receipt in the event of an audit.

Merlo;

Thank you very much. I thought it might help if the church had specific donor records they supplied the IRS but I'm sure my receipts and letters will work.

Thank you,

Steve

Answer

Hello again Steve,

As long as you have the required receipts, you should not have any problems.

Here is a link to the IRS publication that will explain to you what records you need depending on the amount of your donation. The rules for record keeping start on page 18.
