Question

i have 3 fancy mice from my child's class. i just noticed that one of the mice - her eyes have become noticeably larger, almost bug-eyed, recently. I can only assume this is a sign of illness. Before i return them to my child's class this week (hooray) I did not want to return a sick mouse. Please help.

Hello,

You're right that bulging eyes indicate a problem. I can give you some first aid measures that will soothe the mouse's eyes, but you'll need to see a vet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Perhaps you could call the teacher and see if she/he or the school will pay for that. Often when the eyes bulge, it means there is an abscess, malformed tooth, or even a tumor pressing against the eye from inside the head. There won't be anything you can do about that on your own. An eye infection is another possibility, and it will take prescription antibiotics to clear that up. These links will take you to directories of vets who treat mice and rats:

Until you can get to a vet, you can put a drop or two of preservative-free saline solution (the kind made for contacts) in the mouse's eyes every few hours. That will soothe her eyes. You should also keep her in a dark room. When the eyes are like this, light hurts them. Also, use a dust-free soft litter, such as CareFresh brand, because it is less likely to cause further irritation.

Pet mice generally live from 1 to 3 years, so it's possible these mice are elderly. Older mice are more prone to tumors, abscesses, and dental problems. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope this situation works out well.
