Question

2000 Mitsubishi Galant dribbles water on front passengers feet when car turns left after a rainy day.
The water no doubt enters the chamber of the wiper gearbox, ...but how is that rain water suppose to exit the chamber before it rains inside the vehicle.
I see no drain holes or hoses from that chamber.

(where it rains 170 inches per year. Help!)

Answer

Hi Bob,

This is fairly easy. Your vehicle is KNOWN for this issue. Check cowl area under hood for leaves and debris. Clean as needed. Then under car, locate evaporator housing drain pipe/tube. Usually it's clogged with leaves/debris. Clean it out and make sure foam pad that wraps around this tubes' outlet, is no obstructing the tube. OK? Let me know if you need more. The basic story here is to assure evap housing can DRAIN off water/condensation!

I have searched high and low, but cannot find any holes/port/orifices, etc... that drain the chamber. I've even removed the passenger wheel, and the plastic dirt deflector aft of the wheel. The chamber appears clean inside, although its very difficult to see much due to the size and location of access hole to the chamber.
Can you be specific about where exactly the drain hose is? Drivers side? passenger side? Through the firewall behind the eng?   Just where is it?
Is it a metal tube or a rubber hose?
Thanks for your efforts

Answer

Hi Bob,

I remember it being near GAS pedal - of all places. Look at this image. Then check your car. If it's NOT there let me know. If you accept my answer I will stick with you til this is ironed out. No worry. Thanks. :)

Well, I have good news and bad.
First of all, I received no "image" from you. But I searched everywhere AGAIN, especially around the gas petal/cable, but still could find no hose that you referred to.
To test where the low spot was in the chamber, I tried pouring a little water in the chamber (simulating rainfall) and low and behold the water pous out freely on BOTH sides from somewhere behing the plastic wheel well covering. So your diagnosis of a clogged hose does not appear to hold water (pun intended).
THAT BEING THE CASE, ...my original question should have been: Where is the water coming from that pours onto the feet of the front passenger after I make a left land turn?

Hi,

I think you're not understanding me. The evaporator housing, aka HVAC CASE, can have a restriction in its' lower drain pipe/tube. I did send you a link to the image. The image is valid and online. SEE ABOVE. At any rate, if there is a clog in the drain pipe, regardless of the drain pipes' location, water can sit in evap housing and leak almost anywhere in front of dash, driver OR passenger side - especially during a turn.. We need to locate the drain and clean it out. The process is:

1) REMOVE carpet from driver's side floor. (near firewall and to right of gas pedal) (note, this drain 'location' does NOT dictate WHERE water weill leak from in front of car!)

2) Access draibn tube and clean if clogged. RETEST

3) If not clogged - remove evap case to inspect foam pad between case and firewall. If mis shapen or damaged, REPLACE.

4) IF ABOVE IS OK - TEST EVAP CASE FOR LEAKS OR CRACKS. IF FOUND - REPLACE EVAP CASE.

That is Mitsubishi's procedure! Right off service manual/tsb. Let me know if you need more info..

FYI - Mitsubishi even has two tsb's on this isuue. One says locate drain and clean and to check the foam pad that sits between drain and firewall.. The other TSB says to clean drain and area then install a cabin/hvac paper filter behind glove box, even if there was none from factory. Because, the hvac housing can be cut to facilitate the filter option.
