Hello carolina,

Unfortunately, here in the United States, we do not offer the same refund of sales taxes as they offer in Europe when someone pays VAT taxes.

There are some people who are under the impression that this credit exists, and that's why you perhaps have had rumors you can get this tax back. But unforunately that is just not the case.

I am sorry this is not likely the answer you wanted to hear, but all I can do is provide you with the information you requested, and I certainly do not want you going on a wild goose chase for no reason.

If this was helpful please press the Accept button. Positive feedback is also appreciated.

Thank you carolina, and let me know if you have more questions. I am happy to help you with whatever I can.

Info Request

Hello again carolina,

When you say there is a "tax office" inside of that mall, do you happen to know exactly what that is?

Do you remember the name that showed as the payor on the check you received?

Answer

Hello again carolina,

I think I figured out what it is you are referring to.

Texas has a special law where they allow international visitors to claim back sales tax on items they purchased in the state of Texas. That is the office that you went to at the Galleria Mall in Houston, but that only applies to purchases made in Texas. It does not apply to purchases in other states.

Florida does not participate in such a program.

In fact, I believe at this time that Texas and Louisiana are the only two states that allow international visitors to claim back sales tax they paid on purchases inside of their states.

Here is a link to the website that talks about the Texas sales tax refunds, and you will see it applies only to the state of Texas. Florida has no such refund available.
