Question

I have a 2000 Elantra. On 7/31/09 the car was dead. I had the alternator replaced on 7/31/09. Car died again 8/7/09, 7 days later. I was told it was another bad, rebuilt alternator. Car died again today, 8/9/09.
I have a code po562. Could it be the voltage regulator and not 3 bad alternators? Where is the voltage regulator located? I have been told that I can only get it from a dealer. About how much is it?

Greetings,

the regulator is in the alternator, so if you are using reman alternators there is a good chance that is the problem. If the battery is was going dead I would start by doing a draw test. Disconnect the negative terminal and place an multi function meter(set on Milli amps) connect it one probe on the battery terminal and the other the battery neg post. First make sure the door is shut and no hood light is on(pull bulb if there)ignition key off. You should have 40 or less milli amps of draw. If more than 40 try disconnecting fuses, if it is the alternator when you unplug and or power wire it will go down to less than 40.

good luck

Is t likely that it would be three bad alternators?

I would do the draw test and you will know for sure. Most rebuiders only replace what they have too. They don't check for draws, just if the alternator assembly charges. I saw that on a ford once years ago. Pulled tha alternator plug and the draw stopped.
