Question

Hi, Im 24, moving out of my mom's house in a few months and would love to get a pet. I'm gonna be moving out alone and thought should get a pet right after i settle. First I was thinking of getting a small indoor dog from a shelter, but the other day (here comes the question part) I visited a pet shop and fell in love with some little mice that were kept in a tank, right below a beautiful snake, of course i wanted to rescue them all, but my boyfriend kept me from doing that! Anyways, I was wondering how much of a good pet are little mice and rats. I read an article on rats and said their regular live span is about 2 years! I think I may be too sentimental for that, the fact is I'm crying right now while I write this. I've been diagnosed with mayor depression and anxiety attacks and I'm afraid I'll get too attached to a pet.

Is it a good idea in your experience to get a pet in these conditions?, are rodents a good idea? is a baby small dog better? Or should I hold off, period? TY!

Hello,

First of all, a few words about rats and mice as pets. Both make good pets, and rats, in particular, are very personable. They are more intelligent than mice, and can even be taught tricks. The short lifespan is the biggest drawback.

Under your circumstances, I think it would be best to wait until everything in your life is more stable. Dogs are very sensitive to human moods. You may have noticed that Tuki has tried to comfort you when you're depressed. Anxiety, however, is another story. Many dogs become anxious when their humans feel that way. They pick up on the emotion and are afraid that something is very wrong. Dogs can also suffer from anxiety and panic disorders, and a puppy around an anxious person would be at risk. Dogs feeling anxiety often urinate in the house, tear things up, and show other forms of destruction. They can be difficult to live with.

In addition, you'll be living through some big changes in your own life. Puppies require an enormous amount of time, and you may not be in a position to give that right now. I would suggest that you wait until you're settled in and have adjusted to living on your own. At that point, a stable young adult dog, already housebroken, would probably be your best choice. If there's a certain breed you're interested in, give me your state, and I'll see if I can find a rescue group you can contact when you're ready.

In the meantime, if you just want something living in your new home, you might want to consider a fish tank. Fish do require weekly water changes, and the tank has to be set up properly in the beginning, but they're a pretty easy to care for. Scientific studies have shown that watching fish in a tank relaxes and calms us. If you think fish may be an option, let me know, and I'll give you more information on them.

Of course, you can always go visit Tuki for some companionship. If you have more questions or want further information on any of the above, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. There's no additional fee for such follow-up questions, and I'm happy to help.

Thank you so much Anna. I cried like a baby through the entire answer but I know it's the truth and I have to accept it. You are right, my life is changing every minute and it's everything but stable. I do want to get a dog when I'm ready, Tuki is a mixed race puertorrican, as am I :). I would love to rescue a dog as Tuki is a rescued girl and is the most grateful, happy and loving dog I've seen.

I think rodents may not be the answer for me, I couldn't bear a loss every 2 years, maybe when I'm a little more mature and wise and can learn to take it. Right now I have to accept I couldn't take it and it's ok.

I have a betta fish. I could take him with me, he was given to me, but right now he's in the kitchen and my mom has taken the task of feeding him, I would like to ask her if she wants to keep him. Anyway, wether I keep him or get a new one, I go along with the idea. But since they are lonely fish, is it better to get another kind so there can be more in the fish tank? Do you know of any other fish that can live without a filter (that would be my only requirement, no big filter tank), other than goldfish? My cousin had lots of goldfish but they would fight and bite each other, that would definately spike my anxiety haha.

I think you read me well, and I appreciate the empathy. I love snorkeling! It's true that having fish and watching them could help me, makes sense.

Thank you again.

Answer

You're more mature than you think since you're able to see the truth in what I've said. When you get your life stabilized, you'll make a great pet owner.
Bettas are really the only fish that do well without a tank and filter. Many people keep goldfish that way, but often, such goldfish don't live as long as they should. when kept in bowls, they only live a few years, while in a large tank or pond, they can live for decades. If you got a 5 gallon tank, and did regular partial water changes, you could keep some fancy guppies (a male and 2 females), but they, too, would do better with a complete set-up. A betta would be the best choice.

There's no need to click on accept again. Thank you for accepting above.

If you need anything else, don't hesitate.

You have been very helpful. In fact, I just changed my betta's water and remodeled his home, and he has moved in with me to my bedroom. I think he had too much light in the kitchen and there was too much green stuff in his tank every week, so the change must do him good, and me too, saying hello eveyday in the morning.

I hope you have a great day and week! Keep on working!

You're welcome. I'm glad to have been of help. I hope you enjoy living on your own. I left my parents' home at about your age, too, and it was quite an adjustment, but after I adapted, I loved it. Good luck!
