Question

my jack russell is 11 years old and has a swollen hart and valve problems on the heart. she retains fluid and it seems to be drowning her and all this has effected her breathing and oxigen levels in her blood cells. At this point we have her in a oxygen tent to help her breath better but the doctor claims there is no cure for what she has but is trying to open her hart valves so she can breath better and then give her some type of medication to give her a pleasent life but can never heal her. Do you agree with this????

Answer

Hi XXXXXXX~

It sounds to me like you're describing congestive heart failure (also called CHF).

This is a condition that happens when the heart doesn't function properly due to disease or malfunction (such as a leaking valve), which inhibits it's ability to effectively pump blood through the body. The blood backs up in the heart which can in turn, cause the lungs to fill with fluid.

When we have a dog like this at the clinic where I work, we often use the medications called Lasix and Enalapril to help get rid of the fluid in the lungs, which will help the dog be able to breathe easier.

But your vet is right...there is no cure for this problem. The only thing you can do is manage the fluid retention with medication and keep her comfortable.

I hope this helps.

wil she die though? i know its dificult for you to know but what chances do dogs in this state have?

Answer

It depends. If she was in relatively good health otherwise....if the medications work like they should...and if she has a strong will to live...then she could have a decent chance.

The fact that she's still holding on is a good sign.

ok last question then im done, if she pulls through what kind of diet and life should she lead?

Will she have to be bed bound or can she be active in the garden and play etc?

Your coments above: Strong will she has, has had a good health although the problem has been around for a while with her hart, medication side can not answer that. The vet did say she was very concerned though for her and at any moment she could have a attack or more. From 1 (no worries) - 10 (very, very critical) she said the dog was at a 9 but ruled out the option of putting her to sleep for now.

I can handel the fact that my dog is sick but was looking for a answer of she will live and Monday you will see her a bit better. but could not get that from my vet.

How do you see the situation now?

Accepted Answer

Diet won't matter much....however, her lifestyle could end up being one that is low-impact as to avoid putting undue stress on her heart. Short walks.

I think if your dog makes it through the weekend, then she has a good chance of pulling through this....I will absolutely keep my fingers crossed for her.
