Question

Hi, I'm back again. Same cat. He is now 7. Problem he is having is with constipation and Hair balls.
He is on "Cisapride" 10mg a day, "Miralax" 1/8 tsp. mixed with food. He just came home from the hospital after 4 days. He had a large hairball obstruction. My vets are great, did not have to operate. But I need more suggestions on how to keep everything moving. He won't take the "Laxatone", but he loves plain vaseline. I heard that was not good for him? And what about pumpkin? Canned? I just know this is his 3rd hospital visit for this, fluids, I.V. , force feedings.. he is so uncomfortable and I don't know how to prevent this from becoming more chronic than it is. Is this fair to him? He has been in the hospital 3 times within the last 10 month. I feel so bad for him?
Any help u can offer will be greatly appreciated! You are the best! thanks in advance!
Worried owner. My cat is a birman named "Max but I brush him at least 1x a day,he grooms his sister cat, should I clip them both?

Accepted Answer

Hi there!

Welcome back :)

Regarding hairballs...

- One option would be to offer a small amount (1 tablespoon) of canned pumpkin or bran once per day. This will increase the fiber content in the body, making a more formed stool and result in the sense of increased need to defecate.

- Encouarged water/drinking is also recommended as the colon normally reabsorbs water in the body. If we increase water and hydration, we can then get feces to move faster through the intestinal tract.

- A very small amount of petroleum jelly is possible to be given as well. This is the base of the laxatone - and not normally give as cats do not generally like to eat this - but if tolerated, this is also acceptable!

I hope this information helps :) Please let me know if you have additional questions.
